New Zealand racehorse owners & breeders are often willing to consider reasonable offers for their stock, recognising that turning over their horses enables them to re-invest in producing more quality thoroughbreds.
Trials are conducted on a regular basis in New Zealand, used for both educational purposes and to get a glimpse of a horse’s future ability.
For several markets, purchasing a horse out of a trial is advantageous. Although conducted under the equivalent of raceday conditions, trials performances do not count towards a horse’s race record, meaning a buyer can often secure horses with some known ability, that will not be over-handicapped come raceday.
Additionally, several promising horses are purchased off the racetrack in New Zealand, with overseas owners looking to race for substantial prize money, predominantly in Australia and Asia.
It is recommended that prospective purchasers utilise the services of a reputable Bloodstock Agent who monitors trials and raceday form on a regular basis, and can advise regarding conformation and soundness. For a list of members of the Bloodstock Agent Federation Click Here.
Additionally, it is highly advisable to have a signed contract for the benefit of all parties. Click Here for a basic Sale/Purchase Agreement.
