New Zealand’s dual Listed winner Lion Tamer (NZ) (Storming Home) opened his Australian account in fine fashion on Saturday.
With nearly all before him in the Listed Ming Dynasty Handicap (1400m), Lion Tamer (NZ) looked to have his work well and truly cut out for him, but in trademark late style, he put in plenty where it counted most.
Urged on by Hugh Bowman, the talented three-year-old scooted home along the inner, reeling and passing his rivals on the heavy Randwick track to the tune of a half length at the line.
The effort would not only see the Phil Bayly-bred-and-owned galloper’s earnings escalate to NZ$130,070, but would provide a real impetus for the colt’s Australian black-type mission ahead.
To this end, the four-from-seven winner is being geared by his Cambridge trainers Murray and Bjorn Baker for the Gr.3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill on September 18 and the Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), with further thought also being given to a possible Victorian Derby mission.
In the past, Lion Tamer (NZ) has responded gamely to the black-type challenges assigned by the father/son pair.
On debut, he won the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) and just four starts later, he added to this with the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie.
Lion Tamer (NZ) is by the former New Zealand shuttle sire Storming Home and is from a female line well known the Bakers.
Like stable charge Harris Tweed (NZ), Lion Tamer (NZ) descends from Bayly’s grand Gr.1 mare Blue Denim.
Blue Denim is the grand dam of Lion Tamer’s unraced Generous dam Lioness, who has had just the one named foal to date.
