First Stakes Winner for Handsome Ransom

Rememba Howe (NZ)
Wellfield Lodge’s foundation sire Handsome Ransom produced his first stakes winner when Rememba Howe (NZ) took out the Listed Fordell O’Leary Fillies Stakes (1200m) at Wanganui on Saturday.
Under the guidance of current Jockeys’ Premiership leader, Lisa Allpress, the good looking filly stormed home to win by half a length, from Elle Tresor (NZ) (Le Bec Fin) with Waiana Gold (NZ) (Gold Centre) flashing into third place.
It was a popular home town victory for the locally bred, owned and trained three-year-old.
“It has been a very popular win, everywhere you go all over town there are connections of the owners, who have shared in the celebrations,” explained co-trainer Evan Rayner.
The owners are a syndicate of Kaitoke Prison officers, including a member of the Fordell O’Leary Clan who sponsored the race. The Filly was named Remember Howe (NZ) in commemoration of former Kaitoke Prison superintendent Tony Howe.
She was bred by The Keenan Family Trust, and is out of Yachting Magic (Yachtie). She is a half-sister to Reuben Percival (NZ) (Al Akbar) who was recently purchased by Gai Waterhouse. Also in the family is a full two-year-old sister, who is in work with Foxton based- trainer Sandie Cookson.
Evan Rayner was full of praise for the filly, who is yet to run out of the money in five starts.
“She is a lovely filly. She is very determined in everything she does, very strong and a pleasure to have around the stables,” he said.
“She has come through the race well and will now head to Hawke’s Bay for the Group three Gold Trail Stakes (1200m).
“The long term goal is to head to Christchurch for the Group One 1000 and 2000 Guineas in November”
Handsome Ransom stands at Wellfield Lodge in Palmerston North for a service fee of $4000 Plus GST.
