The faith trainer Patrick Payne had in the staying ability of Capecover (NZ) was handsomely rewarded in the Gr.2 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville yesterday.

Unsuccessful in his three previous attempts at the trip, Capecover (NZ) capitalised on a patient rear-ward ride from Steven Arnold, who extracted gradual improvement from the 57kg top weight.
By the point of the turn, Capecover (NZ) had become more prominent and when pulled wide, sustained a strong run to the line to hit the front in the final 100m.

Kept to the task by stablemate Kerdem, Capecover would ultimately prove too tough, landing his most lucrative outing to date by a length in a time of 3:28.81.

He (Capecover) had three tries at 3200m but missed each time, in last year’s Melbourne Cup he got stopped in his tracks a few times and still finished off really strongly, so I was confident he could stay the trip,” said Payne.

Previously trained by Alexander Fieldes, Cape Cover (NZ) has raced with distinction in both New Zealand and Australia, with notable victories for the now Patrick Payne-trained galloper including the Gr.3 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Gr.3 CJC Metropolitan Trophy, the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) and the Listed SAJC Tokyo City Cup.

Now aged seven and in his 5th season of racing, Capecover (NZ) has claimed 12 career wins and 9 placings, with the culmulative effect of this amassing NZ$154,375, A$688,600
Upon inspecting bloodlines, Capecover’s proclivity to stay seems all too natural.

Bred by bloodstock Agent Stuart Hale along with Kay Hale, Capecover is a daughter of the unraced Zabeel mare Set Up, a mare best known for producing Upsetthym (NZ) (Rhythm) the winner of the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) and a placegetter in the Gr.1 Brisbane Cup (3200m).

Capecover (NZ) is a graduate of the 2004 Karaka Select Yearling Sale. He was offered by Tom and Shelly Murtagh’s Esker Lodge and purchased for NZ$40,000 by Kevin Myers.
