Racing and breeding horses has been a component of New Zealand’s culture for well over a hundred years.

With lush pastures and a temperate climate, New Zealand has a natural advantage when it comes to all forms of farming – and raising horses is no exception! By international standards, rearing horses in New Zealand is exceptional value for money.  

 New Zealand breeds and raises thoroughbreds of outstanding physical type, matched by pedigrees of international appeal. A base of seventy or so world class, commercial stud farms are supported by hundreds of smaller private breeding operations.

New Zealand bred racehorses are renowned for their quality and soundness and adapt well to a range of racing environments around the globe.

Investment in thoroughbred breeding in New Zealand has been substantial, with more than 160 stallions on duty and close to 8,000 registered broodmares.

The New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (NZTBA) is the official body that represents thoroughbred breeders in New Zealand, with local branches spread the length and breadth of the country.
